Mohawk Band invited to State

On Saturday Oct. 14, the Madison Mohawk Marching Band competed in the 2017 Kettering Classic, an OMEA event. As one of three bands competing in Class C, the Mohawk band achieved:

  • Best Percussion in their class
  • Best Auxiliary in their class

  • Second Place, class C

In addition, the Mohawk Band was invited to participate in the OMEA State Finals. There are several possible dates for the finals, but we have requested to participate on Sunday November 5 at UD’s Welcome Stadium. We will update this when we have confirmation from the OMEA for our date, location and time.

There are two other upcoming competitions for the Mohawk band:

  • The 40th Annual FHIMA Band Expo – Saturday Oct. 21 at Turpin High School (formerly held at Anderson High School). Madison will perform at 4:00. More information for spectators is available at http://www.fhima.net/band-expo.html.
  • The MSBA Championships – Saturday Nov. 4. The Mid-States Band Association (MSBA) is a different competition circuit from OMEA. Details for this competition will be updated when they become available.

Thanks to all the parents, families and community members who have supported the Madison Band on their way to this significant achievement!

Beauty and the Beast Jr.

Based on the original Broadway production that ran for over thirteen years and was nominated for nine Tony Awards, and the Academy Award-winning motion picture, Disney’s Beauty and the Beast JR. is a fantastic adaptation of the story of transformation and tolerance. Disney’s Beauty and the Beast JR. features some of the most popular songs ever written by Alan Menken and the late Howard Ashman, along with new songs by Mr. Menken and Tim Rice.

The classic story tells of Belle, a young woman in a provincial town, and the Beast, who is really a young prince trapped under the spell of an enchantress. If the Beast can learn to love and be loved, the curse will end and he will be transformed to his former self. But time is running out. If the Beast does not learn his lesson soon, he and his household will be doomed for all eternity.

Tickets for this production are on sale now!

It’s Only a Play

It’s the opening night of The Golden Egg on Broadway, and the wealthy producer Julia Budder is throwing a lavish party in her lavish Manhattan townhouse. Downstairs the celebrities are pouring in, but the real action is upstairs in the bedroom, where a group of insiders have staked themselves out to await the reviews.

The group includes the excitable playwright; the possibly unstable wunderkind director; the pill-popping leading lady, treading the boards after becoming infamous in Hollywood; and the playwright’s best friend, for whom the play was written but who passed up this production for a television series.

Add to this a drama critic who’s panned the playwright in the past and a new-in-town aspiring singer, and you have a prime recipe for the narcissism, ambition, childishness, and just plain irrationality that infuse the theatre—and for comedy. But don’t worry: This play is sure to be the hit they have all been hoping for.

The Madison Thespians present “It’s Only a Play” by Terrence McNally, Feb. 9-11, 2018. Tickets are on sale now.

A Christmas Chaos

On November 17-19, Madison Thespians present A Christmas Chaos, a hilarious backstage comedy that pokes fun at the classic novel and everything that can go wrong with a theatrical production.

Gadzooks! The Royal Shakespeare Company hasn’t arrived as promised to perform their stirring rendition of “A Christmas Carol.” So our intrepid band of hapless actors and technicians must put together their own production in only seven hours! What a pity that they are not quite up to the task, even though they give it their all.

Have you ever experienced backstage mayhem? Well, you haven’t seen anything yet! The play focuses on these poor but dedicated thespians doing their best while chaos is all around them: an out-of-control director, thrown together props and costumes, ridiculous scenery, and tons of flubs and confusion.

Audition dates and materials will be posted in the Madison Drama App in August.

Thoroughly Modern Millie

Madison Thespians present their spring musical, Thoroughly Modern Millie, April 27-29, 2018.

The winner of six Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Thoroughly Modern Millie was the 2002 season’s most awarded new show on Broadway! Based on the 1967 Academy Award-winning film, Thoroughly Modern Millie takes you back to the height of the Jazz Age in New York City, when “moderns,” including a flapper named Millie Dillmount, were bobbing their hair, raising their hemlines, entering the workforce and rewriting the rules of love. This high-spirited musical romp is a delightful valentine to the long-standing spirit of New York City and the people who seek to discover themselves there.

Set in New York City in 1922, Thoroughly Modern Millie tells the story of young Millie Dillmount from Kansas, who comes to New York in search of a new life for herself. Her grand plan is to find a job as a secretary for a wealthy man and then marry him. However, her plan goes completely awry. The owner of her dingy hotel kidnaps young girls to sell to the Far East, her wealthy boss is slow in proposing marriage and the man she actually falls in love with doesn’t have a dime to his name… or so he tells her.

Filled with frisky flappers, dashing leading men and a dragon lady of a villainess that audiences will love to hate, Thoroughly Modern Millie is a perfectly constructed evening of madcap merriment. From explosive tap numbers to a “Fred and Ginger” routine on a window ledge, musical theatre has found a new heroine for the ages in Thoroughly Modern Millie!
